What Should I Receive When I Buy a Logo?

I have been working with several small Carroll County, Maryland businesses this month on logos. One located in Westminster, MD, one in Sykesville, MD, Upperco, MD, and the other in Hampstead, MD. I always walk all of my customers through what they will be receiving once their logo is complete, and I am always surprised when they don’t realize that they get so many different logo versions and file types.

I will break down what each logo version is and should be used for and also what file types you should receive.

Full Color Logo

You should receive several full color logo versions and file types, and here’s why: Your logo in Full color can be used in many applications, from T-Shirt to Billboards, you will need completely different files to create such.

You may also get your full color logo in different shapes, a vertical and a circular for example, this isn’t always the case but often you’ll get it in different shapes so that you can lay them out on a business card that is rectangular vs. something more round.

If your logo includes an image and also text, you should get them broken apart, so just the typographical element and also just the image itself.

Black and White Logo

In addition to the full color logo, you should receive an all white logo that can be converted to any one color. This is helpful for printing T-Shirts and promotional materials in one color, and for doing any sort of vinal signage.

Outlined Logo

Lastly you should receive a vector version of your logo. This is a file type that you more than likely won’t even be able to open, but it is very important that if you own the rights of your logo that you receive this piece. This version of your logo allows you to take it to any other graphic designer so that they can use your exact high quality artwork.

File Types

.AI

This is an illustrator file and is vectorized so that it can be kept at any size without altering the quality of your image, this file type is for the artist and would be sent to a company that may be making edits for you or designing new pieces.

.PDF

This is a file you have probably seen many times, a PDF will be provided to you so that in the instance you want to have a high quality version of your logo to forward on or have downloadable off your site. A PDF will not typically be used in further designs and shouldn’t be used when creating new artwork.

.EPS

This is a smaller file size version on the .AI file and is something that may be requested from another designer. An EPS file is one that is vectorized and editable but is a much smaller file type and is usually free of layers. You may be asked for an EPS file if you are have T-Shirts done or embroidery.

.PNG

This is a file that is very important and will be used on the web. If you are having a website created you will want to provide your development or design team with this version of your logo.

.JPEG

This version of your logo is perfect for email, social media, and internet graphics!
